A week in words
This week has been a good one, I have managed to throw a few solid hours into the React Native course. I have also managed to start planning out my mobile application project!
React Native steals the show again. I made a few tweaks here and there to my website and started planning my top-secret project!
React Native - Week 4
This week I continued with the Udemy course, I managed to get all the way through to section 15.
In the past week I have looked at a few things worth noting:
I have covered this in past articles on React and how I feel about the Context API and if it is replacing redux and if redux is dead so please check that article out!
My opinion remains unchanged on this topic, for now, but I did enjoy switching it up and using context for a bit.
So in the last course section (14), I started building a small custom express API which can handle authentication using JSON web tokens. This is only in its most basic form at the moment and it’s not yet hooked up to anything such as firebase.
The real meat of Authentication comes in section 15 which is 7 hours worth of content alone, so I’m sure I will be writing much more about that next week!
Next weeks goals
If I can make it through the next section alone by next week I will be happy! It’s seven hours of content for the next section alone so I will have to power through!
The result of the next tutorial section should be a small tracking app somewhat similar to Strava to track walking/running routes. I will make sure to share a screenshot once it’s complete, I cannot promise it will be pretty as I’m focusing on the React Native side, not the styling!
I made some changes to the website this week, nothing major. I removed the timeline components and its visual effects from my about page. I removed it in favour of a more simple flat approach on the page to better fit the theme and simplicity of the rest of the website, it stuck out like a sore thumb beforehand. so check that out!
Top secret project?
Yes, I have been mentioning a top-secret project for the past few weeks now, and I do intend to keep it secret until release. I imagine I am going to be building it for a while, so we will see if that sticks. What I can say is:
- It’s a mobile application
- It’s only in its earliest stages of planning
- I still have no idea what I’m doing
At this stage, I’m still figuring out the basics of the idea and planning it out. However, I now have a whiteboard full of design scribbles. I am almost at a stage to start formalising them up and designing them in a real design tool like SketchApp!
Exciting times. Although the project is a secret for now, as I’m planning and building it I will be sharing code snippets and lessons learned as this will be my first mobile application!

The Secretlab Titan arrived last week and it’s the comfiest thing I have ever sat on. Absolutely no regrets with that purchase.
The garden is in its final stages. The patio will be finished tonight and then all that is outstanding is for me to get some sleepers in and to grout the spaces.
Lockdown has come back to the UK for the foreseeable future, no surprise that happened after schools universities and businesses started creeping back!
Until Next Week
